Chapter 470 [Home] [Accept Jesus] [More] [Previous] [Next] 470.000.000 Torrey: p485 THE DESTINY OF BELIEVERS470.010.000
Torrey: p485, T:I 470.010.010
Torrey: p485, T:I, P:1 1 John 2:17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 470.010.020
Torrey: p485, T:I, P:2 John 11:25-26 [25] Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; [26] and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" John 8:51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. Believers in Christ fall asleep, they never die. Acts 7:60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep. 470.010.030
Torrey: p485, T:I, P:3 1 Thessalonians 4:13- 15 [13] Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. [14] We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. [15] According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. QUESTION: What is meant by sleep? Does it refer to a state of unconsciousness? Is this state called sleep to distinguish it from being awake, or is it called sleep to distinguish it from death? The full answer to this question will be found under the next point. But note this, that sleep is not necessarily a state of unconsciousness, but oftentimes of highest consciousness and mental activity. Usually, however, sleep is a condition in which one is largely shut out of interaction with the outside world and shut up to himself and God and His angels, or the Devil and his angels. 470.010.040
Torrey: p486, T:I, P:4 Philippians 1:23-24 [23] I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; [24] but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 2 Corinthians 5:6, 8 [6] Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. [8] We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. QUESTION: What is the precise and definite character of our existence when "absent from the body" and "at home with the Lord," up to the time of the coming of the Lord and our being "clothed with our heavenly dwelling?" 2 Corinthians 5:8, 2, 4: *** FIX THIS *** 2 Corinthians 5:2 [2] Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, [3] because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. [4] For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. [5] Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. ANSWER: The Bible seems to give but little explicit and detailed information on this point. It does say, however, that this state "is very far better" than our present state. This leaves no room for the Roman Catholic teaching of tortures in "purgatory", nor for a state of unconsciousness. It is evidently a state of conscious bliss. It evidently is not the highest state to which the believer shall attain. 2 Corinthians 5:1-4, 8: [1] Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. [2] Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, [3] because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. [4] For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. [8] We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 470.010.050
Torrey: p487, T:I, P:5 1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 1 Corinthians 15:12-13, 20- 23 [12] But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? [13] If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. [20] But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. [21] For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. [22] For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. [23] But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 1 Corinthians 15:35-38 [35] But someone may ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?" [36] How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. [37] When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. [38] But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. The grain that was sown disintegrates and many of its constituent elements go, no one can say to where. But the formative principle takes to itself many new elements, no one can fully say from where. So it is in the resurrection. QUESTION: What about those who have been cremated, etc.? ANSWER: Our resurrection bodies will not simply be "repaired" human bodies. Each of us, both believers and non-believers, will be transformed. We will receive a new body with some characteristics different from a human body. This is how it will be possible for those who are condemned to suffer eternally in fire. John the Revealer states that during the Millennium Satan will be chained up for a thousand years. Yet Zechariah makes it clear that even during this "devil-free" period children will be born who will sin. If our resurrection bodies were simply "repaired" human bodies, we would still be in the flesh, and subject to the same sinful urges we have now, even in the absence of Satan. 470.010.060
Torrey: p487, T:I, P:6 2 Corinthians 5:1-2, 4 [1] Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 470.010.070
Torrey: p487, T:I, P:7 Philippians 3:20-21 [20] But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, [21] who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RESURRECTION BODY. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(1) 1 Corinthians 15:35-38 [35] But someone may ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?" [36] How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. [37] When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. [38] But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(2) 1 Corinthians 15:50-51 [50] I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. [51] Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(3) Luke 24:39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(4) 1 Corinthians 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(5) 1 Corinthians 15:43(a) [43] it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; Compare Revelation 1:13-17 [13] and among the lamp- stands was someone "like a son of man," dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. [14] His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. [15] His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. [16] In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. [17] When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(6) 1 Corinthians 15:43(b) it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; The days of weariness and weakness will be forever at an end. The body will be able to accomplish all the Spirit purposes. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(7) 1 Corinthians 15:47-49 [47] The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. [48] As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. [49] And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(8) Matthew 13:43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. Daniel 12:3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Compare Matthew 17:2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Luke 9:29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. NOTE - It has been conjectured that the bodies of Adam and Eve were so before they sinned, and that this glory served as a covering which departed when they sinned. So "they knew that they were naked." Genesis 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(9) Matthew 22:30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Luke 20:35-36 [35] But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, [36] and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(9)(a) Matthew 22:30(a) At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; Luke 20:35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(9)(b) Luke 20:35-36 [35] But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, [36] and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(10) 1 Corinthians 15:41- 42(a) [41] The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. [42] So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. 470.010.070
Torrey: p488, T:I, P:7(11) Romans 8:23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. The Resurrection Body will be the consummation of the adoption, our placing as sons. In the Resurrection Body it will be outwardly manifest that we are sons of God. Before His incarnation Christ was "in the form of God", i.e., in the visible appearance of God. Philippians 2:6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, So shall we be in the resurrection. Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 1 John 3:2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 470.010.080
Torrey: p489, T:I, P:8 1 Thessalonians 4:17(a) After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. 470.010.090
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9 John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 1 Thessalonians 4:17(b) And so we will be with the Lord forever. John 12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. 470.010.092
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(1)#1 470.010.092a
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(1)#1 John 14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. We shall be in a prepared place. A place that Jesus himself has gone for the express purpose of preparing for us. We shall be a prepared people in a prepared place. This place that Jesus is preparing He speaks of as "abodes" or "abiding places" (translated "mansions"). 470.010.092b
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(2)#1 Hebrews 11:10, 16 [10] For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. [16] Instead, they were longing for a better country -- a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. We shall be in a city which has foundations whose builder and make is God, a better country than this, a heavenly country, a city prepared by God for us. 470.010.094
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(1)#2 470.010.094a
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(1)#2 Hebrews 13:14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. 470.010.094b
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(2)#2 Revelation 21:22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb are the temple thereof. We will not go to some building to worship, but right to themselves. 470.010.094c
Torrey: p490, T:I, P:9(3)#2 Revelation 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The city has no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine upon it: for the glory of God lightens it, and the Lamb himself is the lamp thereof. Paul got a hint of the dazzling brilliance of that light on the Damascus Road. Our resurrection eyes will be able to endure and enjoy the glory that blinded him. There will be no dark days. 470.010.094d
Torrey: p491, T:I, P:9(4)#2 Revelation 21:25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The gates of the city will never be shut and there will no night. Perfect security and no darkness. 470.010.094e
Torrey: p491, T:I, P:9(5)#2 Revelation 21:27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. There will be there nothing unclean, nothing abominable, nothing false, untrue, nor unreal. No saloons, no filth, no shams. 470.010.094f
Torrey: p491, T:I, P:9(6)#2 Revelation 22:1-2 [1] Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb [2] down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. There shall be a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the midst of the street thereof, and on both sides of the river shall be the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree for the healing of the nations. 470.010.100
Torrey: p491, T:I, P:10 2 Thessalonians 1:7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. Hebrews 4:9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; Now we have conflict and tribulation. THen we shall have rest and glory. 470.010.110
Torrey: p491, T:I, P:11 John 17:24 Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. The word translated "see" is a strong word. It means to gaze at with interest and intensity. We shall put our whole being into rapturous and adoring contemplation of the revealed glory of Him who on earth suffered shame for us. 470.010.120
Torrey: p492, T:I, P:12 1 John 3:2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. QUESTION: Does the Him here refer to Christ or the Father? ANSWER: It does not matter; for if we are like the one, we shall also be like the other: Hebrews 1:3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. John 14:9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? Philippians 2:6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 470.010.130
Torrey: p492, T:I, P:13 Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. We shall not only behold His glory, but reflect it in ourselves. Our life is now a hidden one, hid with Christ in God, but when He is manifested in glory we shall be too. Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. (1) Romans 8:18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us. (2) 2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. This eternal weight of glory is being worked out for us more and more exceedingly by our present momentary light affliction. John 17:22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: (3) 2 Thessalonians 2:14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. The glory that God has given to Jesus shall be ours. 1 Thessalonians 2:12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. We shall be sharers in God's own glory and kingdom. IN a word, we shall be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ, glorified together with Him. Romans 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs -- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 470.010.140
Torrey: p493, T:I, P:14 Matthew 25:20-23 [20] The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. `Master,' he said, `you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' [21] "His master replied, `Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' [22] "The man with the two talents also came. `Master,' he said, `you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' [23] "His master replied, `Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' 470.010.150
Torrey: p493, T:I, P:15#1 Luke 19:12-13, 15-19 [12] He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. [13] So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. `Put this money to work,' he said, `until I come back.' [15] "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. [16] "The first one came and said, `Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' [17] " `Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. `Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' [18] "The second came and said, `Sir, your mina has earned five more.' [19] "His master answered, `You take charge of five cities.' We are saved by faith but rewarded according to our own works. Compare: Matthew 6:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 [11] For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. [12] If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, [13] his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. [14] If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. [15] If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. 470.010.150
Torrey: p494, T:I, P:15#2 Revelation 7:13 9-10, 13- 17 [9] After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. [10] And they cried out in a loud voice: "Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb." [13] Then one of the elders asked me, "These in white robes -- who are they, and where did they come from?" [14] I answered, "Sir, you know." And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. [15] Therefore, "they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. [16] Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. [17] For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." 470.010.160
Torrey: p494, T:I, P:16 James 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. Perseverance is the proof of true love to Christ, that we stand true to him under trial, and this wins the crown of life. 470.010.170
Torrey: p495, T:I, P:17 2 Timothy 4:8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day -- and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 470.010.180
Torrey: p495, T:I, P:18 1 Peter 5:1-4 [1] To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: [2] Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers -- not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; [3] not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. [4] And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. Note the three crowns -- "The Crown of Life","the Crown of Righteousness", and "the Crown of Glory" -- and who is to receive each. 470.010.190
Torrey: p495, T:I, P:19 James 2:5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? Luke 22:28-29 [28] You are those who have stood by me in my trials. [29] And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, Luke 12:32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 470.010.192
Torrey: p495, T:I, P:19(1) Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. 470.010.194
Torrey: p496, T:I, P:19(2) Matthew 25:34 Then the King will say to those on his right, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world." 470.010.196
Torrey: p496, T:I, P:19(3) Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 470.010.200

Torrey: p496, T:I, P:20(1) Revelation 2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. 470.010.200b
Torrey: p496, T:I, P:20(2) Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. 470.010.200c
Torrey: p496, T:I, P:20(3) Revelation 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. 470.010.200d
